Viewers can’t help but compare Pinoy Idol with American Idol on it’s 1st Performance Night

Last night the boys showed why they belong to the Top 24. It was a good-to-average presentation, while televiewers can’t help but compare the production of Pinoy Idol to that of American Idol. And why not? It’s a franchise. And ABC5’s Philippine Idol almost met the standards of American Idol production when it held its ground last year. How much more if it’s with GMA now?

Read more for my rants, raves and reviews of last night’s show.

TECHNICALS. The set is ok for now (semifinals). But the stage appears too small for the performers, especially when we are expecting movements to pair off with their song numbers. I remember last year’s Philippine Idol, they even did a feature on how their stage was engineered - and the stage was really good, unexpectedly. So now that GMA handles the Idol franchise, viewers expect more, fresher and greater ideas. So show them all out. The spotlight is almost unnoticeable as the stage projects dim lighting (or is it just my GMA Pinoy TV reception?), and the audio is poor. Kudos to Ignacio for not putting butterflies on the entire show/set.

THE HOST. Raymond Gutierrez, ever since the world begun, lacks the passion to deliver and connect to the audience. His spiels are, well, he lack spiels, spontaenity. He’s not consistent of asking each and every contestant before turning them over to the judges. Or sometimes, he’s redundant of his adlibs. Boring. Also, can somebody tell him now to add more masculinity in his overall image? This is not Showbiz Central boy!

THE JUDGES. Where in the world is Wyngard’s fiesty and fierceful out-of-this-world comments last night? All of the judges seems to be sweeter and more careful in belting out comments this time - that some of those have gone over-hyped. How can they say superb, excellent and fantastic when viewers have only witnessed good to not-bad performances. Please tell me readers that you agree? It’s good though that Wyngard seems to divert away from his “becoming palengkero” image. Ogie continues to give smart comments and tips, while Jolina adds more about the look and stage presentation of the contestants. The 3 are consistent in saying their concerns for those rockers that they may be able to adapt to other genres as the competition goes along.

And why didn’t they all speak up on each and every contestant? It’s unfair for the viewers, even though majority are not really considering what they’ll say before they vote their favorites.

CONTESTANTS. The performances started good, but a little boring, to say. Especially on its scheduled airing. Thanks to the rockers who brought some energy. We now don’t see too much old-school song choices, but Alamid’s Your Love (Rye), Sana ay Ikaw Na Nga (Elliot) and Ulitin (Warren). Rye and Warren have given a new lifewave though to their song choices. Other than rock, RnB is most showcased.

One thing I can’t help but notice is how the boys make-up. Woohoo! Is it Pinoy Idol or a gay pageant? Also the Top 12 girls wears too much of those fake powders.

ARRANGEMENTS. The musical director Danny Tan, must come-up with fresher ideas on how to arrange the song choices of the contestants. Don’t make it sound like we’re still on the Pinoy Pop Superstar. Don’t we have other musical directors available out there?

MY TOP 5 AND MY COMMENTS:
(1) Toffer Rei - good rock quality voice, just needs to work out his falsetto
(2) Warren Antig - astig performer. i was surprised about the way he uses the stage. he knows it. just work out on your birits. and how about RnB man?
(3) Walton Zerrudo - great vocals, but you need to belt out your range in this show.
(4) Rye Estrada - he gave the pop-rock classic, Your Love, a life. he needs to build charisma.
(5) JJ Jr. - though he forgot some lyrics, i think he can work that out, and continue to show his pop-rnb mastery.

MY WORST: Elliot Andal - for not giving a new wave for a Basil Valdez classic; and Sherwin Marquez - for simply unable to connect very well with his song.

RAYMOND, Raymond, why can’t you disclose to the televiewers how many will be eliminated on Sunday? And is it reallu a must to say that one can cast his vot up to 200 times? I know it’s how the show goes, but I’m just concern with the contestants who have less kins that can afford that much pesos in texts. Wouldn’t it be unfair also for the boys that last night’s show was too late for some flocks that might vote for them?

O well, Ion Man out…
